The use of production concepts of industry 4.0 technologies in the construction industry is fairly low compared to other domains. High tolerances of steel elements hinder the application of robot-based manufacturing systems so far. Due to this, the steel construction sector is characterized by a high degree of manual labour which not only leads to lower productivity but also to dangerous and hazardous working conditions. To deal with the problem of high tolerances, ways need to be found to capture and process these.
The project Construction Planning Oriented Management of Manufacturing in Steel Construction 4.0 (BauFeSt 4.0) deals with a cross-process examination of tolerances and process parameters of steel elements. The aim is to increase the application of flexible and partly automated robotic concepts in steel construction. The needed data shall be captured via different means e.g., novel laser scanning methods, and then transferred into a model. The results contribute to the development and application of flexible assembly systems and support small and medium-sized businesses to deal with the current challenges of shortage of skilled labour, low productivity and operational safety.
